About

The Fanatic is a 2019 thriller film starring John Travolta and Devon Sawa and directed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst. The film was a box office and critical failure, with many criticizing Travolta's performance in the movie. It has since developed a cult audience.

History

On July 24th, 2019, the trailer for The Fanatic premiered on YouTube. The post received more than 1.2 million views in less than one year (shown below).

On August 30th, 2019, The Fanatic premiered in 52 theaters around the United States.[1]

Reception

The film was a box office disappointment, earning $3,153 in its opening weekend. The Hollywood Reporter[2] wrote:

On Friday, The Fanatic grossed a mere $3,153 from 52 theaters scattered across the U.S. for a location average of roughly $60, according to those with access to grosses via Comscore. That means the movie may not earn more than $15,000 for the four-day holiday weekend. In a handful of theaters, it grossed $10 or less; the highest gross was $736 at the Arena Cinelounge in Hollywood.

The Fanatic also received poor reviews from critics. The movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes [3] rated the film 16% (based on 58 reviews). In their Critics Consensus, the site wrote, "John Travolta gives it his oddly coiffed all, but The Fanatic rings hollow as an examination of the way fan appreciation can curdle into toxic obsession."

Impact

The film became notorious for its content, considered an example of "so bad, it's good." Imgur [4] user IJestForALIving wrote, "It’s legitimately the craziest movie I’ve ever seen. Not in a good way either. I have no fucking idea how this movie was ever made."

This new John Travolta movie is wild.

On September 6th, YouTuber Chris Suckmann reviewed the film as part of a "Hilariocity" review, a type of "so bad, it's good" classification, like The Room. The post received more than 1.7 million views (shown below, left).

On March 22nd, 2020, Redditor [5] LessThanTaelor shared an object labeling meme featuring a screenshot from the film. The post received more than 24,000 points (96% upvoted) and 135 comments in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
