About
Vainglory (often abbreviated as "VG") is a mobile MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, a genre of video games based on the DOTA mod for Warcraft III) developed by Super Evil Megacorp specifically for mobile Android and IOS devices. It is free-to-play and features multiple microtransactions in order to support itself.
History
Vainglory started development on February 2012 when "veteran" developers from Blizzard, Riot, Imsoniac, and Rockstar joined together to found Super Evil Megacorp (or SEMC for short) in San Mateo, California and develop Vainglory. It was presented on the iPhone 6 announcement event to showcase the iPhone 6's Metal graphics API.
Gameplay
Vainglory's map, The Halcyon Fold.
As with other MOBAs, in Vainglory you get to play as a single character (called "heroes" in Vainglory) and fight other characters to win the game. You can buy "items" to increase the strength of your hero using gold, which can be obtained through defeating other heroes and AI characters. There are a variety of objectives; turrets (stationary buildngs that attack enemy players if not distracted using minions), the jungle bosses (which will be discussed later), and the Vain Crystal which is in the middle of each team's bases and must be destroyed in order to win a match. The only existing map is divided in two parts; jungle and lane. There are also weaker AI characters located in different parts of the map; Minions in the lane, Treants and Jungle Creeps in the jungle. In the center of the jungle there are two stronger AI characters; the Kraken and the Gold Miner. The Gold Miner appears 4 minutes into the game and can be defeated to gain gold for the entire team, the amount depends on the time passed, capping at 300 gold. 15 minutes into the game the Kraken replaces the Gold Miner, defeating it will cause it to fight for your team and target turrets. There is currently a total of four gamemodes in the game; Standard, Blitz, Battle Royale, and Practice. Retextures for different heroes called "skins" and the heroes themselves are purchaseable through Glory, which can be obtained through completing matches, and opening chests, and ICE which can be obtained through microtransactions.
