On February, 10th, 2021 the TF2 and Splatoon subreddits would make an alliance with each other, it all started when a reddit user by the name of u/1amrunningoutofnames posted a picture of two photos one on top another, the bottom photo was by u/nikko_cat, the image was of a Splatoon character by the name of Pearl, the camera was placed at a low angle shot showing how flat the character's face was and it looked extremely odd. The top photo was by u/Henryddit of a sandvich from TF2 that was described as a "HALE'S OWN KILLSTREAK STRANGE UNUSUAL VALVE SANDVICH". Because it was posted on both the TF2 subreddit and the Splatoon subreddit it became very popular.

The next day on February 11th 2021 memes started popping up on both the Splatoon and TF2 subreddits about a alliance between the 2 subreddits. It started with someone from the Splatoon subreddit "giving" the TF2 community an armor case to "protect against the bots", the TF2 community responded by "giving" the Splatoon community a sandvich in gratitude, the Splatoon community sent back the sandvich with a photoshopped bite taken out of it with the caption "we graciously accept your sandvich, and hope for more collabs in the future".

After word had spread of the collab between the fandoms many different fandoms of video games wanted a piece of the pie. A so called "alliance" was created to help TF2 with their bot crisis. The word spread to subreddits closely related to the two subs first, TF2 had close relations with the Hazbin Hotel subreddit and Payday subs while Splatoon had close relations to the Animal Crossing subreddit which in turn informed the Doom sub. So Hazbin Hotel, Payday, Animal Crossing, and Doom were the first to know, after that each of those subreddits informed other subreddits until the list of subs in the "alliance" was too large to count. To keep track of the alliance members r/AllianceOfGames was created, where a list was posted of official members.

This was a short lived fad that died within two days, it had quite a lot of backlash from the TF2 community because of the utter amount of spam the trend caused.
