Thanos Completes the Gauntlet refers to a series of object-labeled image macros that show the Marvel supervillain character Thanos completing the Infinity Gauntlet, a powerful weapon that is powered by six magic stones, and giving him immense power in the film Avengers: Infinity War.
Origin
Thanos Completes the Gauntlet combines two images from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War, which were released on August 1st, 2014 and April 26th, 2019, respectively (clips below, left and right).
The earliest known combination of the two clips as a meme was published on the /r/memes[1] subreddit on March 16th, 2019. In the meme, the Infinity Stones are labeled various catchphrases said by "white suburban dads," and Thanos is labeled "white suburban dads." The post received more than 5,900 points (97% upvoted) and 70 comments (shown below).
Spread
The following day, Redditor[2] Rv1der published a variation of the meme on the "/r/dankmemes ":/memes/dank-memes subreddit with Thanos labeled "Timeless games." The post received more than 16,000 points (93% upvoted) and 430 comments in one week (shown below, left).
On March 18th, Redditor[3] Polary posted a variation of the meme that jokes about the J.K Rowling parodies, which mock her frequent posts about her Harry Potter series of books and films. The post received more than 56,000 points (95% upvoted) and 730 comments in four days (shown below, center).
Over the next week, more variations of the meme continued to post versions of the meme (examples below, right).
