The End Of Evangelion Hospital Scene refers to a traumatic and shocking scene that takes place during the animated movie The End of Evangelion, which is part of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime. In the scene, the character Shinji Ikari finds Asuka Langley passed out in a coma in the hospital before performing an explicit act that is out of character and shocked many viewers, leading to many different reactions and memes similar to watching a shock video.

Origin

Originally released in Japan on July 19th, 1997, the film The End of Evangelion opens with the character Shinji grappling with a difficult and painful choice he had to make. In an effort to try and find comfort and guidance, he seeks out his friend Asuka, who is comatose in the hospital. While attempting to wake her up, Shinji accidentally exposes her nude body and then proceeds to masturbate to her, with only the final result being visible to the audience. The still image of Shinji, saying that he is "fucked up" became a well-known "no context" image to share outside of the fandom over the following years (shown below).

Online, the scene has been poked at for the extreme action taken by Shinji, with many people making memes about it throughout the years since it debuted.

It's unknown when the first meme referencing the scene appeared online, but examples date back to at least the late 2000s. One such early example was posted on April 16th, 2008, when an anonymous poster uploaded a Demotivational Poster of Shinji with the original being a meme in the style of Ha! Ha! Guy to the website Moonbuggy,^[1] claiming that being Shinji is one of the worst things you could be in life (shown below).

As the series grew in virality and additional users online became aware of it, more people began to post their own memes and takes on the infamous hospital scene. One way in which people made memes for it involved replacing the audio found within the scene to try and add a better type of context to it and make it less shocking.

For example, on August 18th, 2019, YouTuber Dinky Donk^[2] uploaded a video in which an attempt at a 4Kids Censorship meme was made, with Shinji, named Shawn, accidentally spilling his ice cream on Asuka, named Ashley, earning over 80,000 views in five years (shown below).

With the release of the "Rebuild Saga" of movies, new fans were introduced to the franchise in the following years, with many going back through and watching the older episodes and movies and stumbling across the hospital scene. This led to many people posting their first reactions to the scene online, as is the case with the X user @kametokage1^[3] who on November 6th, 2019, uploaded their surprise at the hospital scene in a caption and posted an image of Shinji saying that he failed No Nut November as a reference to his actions (shown below).
