4kids Censorship In X is a phrasal template used in a series of parody videos on YouTube imagining various shows and anime series as if they were censored by 4Kids Entertainment. The videos became popularized on YouTube in mid-2022 and gained further virality in early 2023, along with thumbnails from the videos and parody thumbnails showing how various scenes from anime and other shows might be censored by 4Kids.
Origin
American licensing company 4Kids Entertainment, which has dubbed many notable anime series for North American viewers, is known to censor adult themes in the series they license. Some YouTubers have created videos comparing the original anime to the 4Kids censor, with one of the most viewed examples being One Piece (shown below).
On July 22nd, 2022, YouTuber[1] SNALEX posted a video titled, "What If 4kids Censored Attack On Titan like One Piece," garnering over 49,000 views in seven months (shown below). In the video, the YouTuber censors scenes from Attack on Titan in an exaggerated manner, parodying 4Kids' censorship (shown below).
Spread
The trend spread on YouTube over the following months, with YouTubers including SNALEX, Kirby871 and zamon0 becoming some of the most consistent trend followers. On October 20th, 2022, YouTuber[2] SNALEX posted a version of the meme about Chainsaw Man, garnering over 3.7 million views in four months (shown below, left). On December 28th, YouTuber[3] Kirby posted a version with Family Guy, garnering over a million views in just over a month (shown below, right).
On January 30th, 2023, YouTuber[4] ZAMONO posted a version of the meme with Velma, garnering over 119,000 views in just over a week (shown below).
On February 7th, Twitter[5] user @bendyjw posted a thumbnail from a Family Guy version of the meme, writing, "Reply with those damn 4kids censorship thumbnails like this," garnering over 13,000 likes in three days and inspiring numerous replies with thumbnails from the videos (examples shown below).
