About
The name "The honeys missing" came from a particular comic created using the Honey Nut Cheerios Comic Creator on a thread in 4chan's /b/ board. The comic features two bees in which one exclaims "The honeys missing!" The comic then zooms in on the face of one of the bees; the last panel features a disturbing, yet humorous anticlimax.

Although Millsberry likely didn't intend for their comic generator to be used to create such vile images, /b/tards nonetheless abused the simple and easy-to-use program and posted their version of Buzz's adventures on the same thread. As always, hilarity ensued. The plethora of images was named "the honeys missing" by an unknown anon, and thus a meme was born.

Origin
Although /b/ is notorious for popularizing the meme, "the honeys missing" actually began on 4chan's /co/ (Comics & Cartoons) board. The earliest known posting was in late September 2010 in a thread that quickly garnered hundreds of replies featuring Buzz or other Honey Nut Cheerios characters in awkward or random positions, often spurting out strange or inappropriate phrases. /co/ was famous for voting up a particular comic titled "Maddy's Big Surprise" to the to the top of the Honey Nut Cheerios site, allowing the public to witness for a few days (the obscene comic was taken down after 2 days). Below is a screenshot of the infamous comic.
