The Saddest People Cum the Hardest and The Saddest People Shit the Loudest refers to a series of ironic catchphrases parodying the popular inspirational quote "The loneliest people are the kindest. The saddest people smile the brightest. The most damaged people are the wisest. All because they do not wish to see anyone else suffer the way they do." Originating from a viral Tumblr post, the catchphrases have since gained popularity as captions in ironic memes.
Origin
The author of the quote is unknown. In addition to being spread as an inspirational quote, it has been used in image macros featuring sets of three characters from various fandoms (examples shown below). For example, on December 26th, 2014, a Breaking Bad macro was posted on 9GAG (shown below, left),[1] gaining over 44,400 points in five years, with a January 2nd, 2015, repost by 9GAG's Facebook[2] page accumulating over 324,000 reactions and 53,000 shares.
On August 22nd, 2019, Tumblr[3] user urinates made a text post reading "the saddest people………shit the loudest." On the same day, Tumblr user candygarnet commented "the loneliest people……… cum the hardest." The post received over 49,800 notes in one year.
Spread
While the first use of the catchphrases as captions in ironic memes is unknown, it's estimated to have occurred in December 2019. The earliest discovered meme containing the altered quote was posted by Instagram[4] and iFunny[5] user 1847memes.mp3 on December 23rd, 2019 (shown below).
On January 28th, 2020, iFunny[6] user Doonge reposted the earliest viral instance of a meme containing the catchphrase, a Yume Nikki fanart captioned with the altered quote (author unknown; shown below, left). The post received over 460 smiles in six months. On January 30th, iFunny[7] user fReE_MoViE_ posted a video version of the meme accompanied by "It's Ok, You're OK" by Bonjr (shown below, right).
On March 9th, 2020, Instagram[8] user buzz_lighthole posted a SpongeBob SquarePants version of the meme which gained over 47,200 views and nearly 7,000 likes in four months (shown below).
Starting in March 2020, the altered quotes gained moderate popularity in ironic memes on iFunny, Twitter, Instagram and other online platforms.
