The This Is Danny Scam or the Dog Porcupine Quill Removal Scam is an online scam popularized on TikTok that involves users posting photo slideshows of a dog named Danny with porcupine quills stuck in its face, claiming that they need money to get the quills removed and providing a CashApp handle to donate to. The images of "Danny" are taken from an April 2023 post to a dog-training page on Facebook made to spread awareness. The name became popularized on TikTok in July 2023, inspiring memes and reactions as people learned it was a scam.

On April 24th, 2023, the JMK9 Dog Training Facebook[1] page posted a photo of a dog with porcupine quills in her face, writing, "This little lady couldn’t help herself and ran down a Porcupine. Any of the 3 most important commands in the world would have saved her from these daggers. Come, Leave It, Place. Don’t wait for your dog to come back to the house looking like a GSP / Porcupine Hybrid to teach these things," garnering around 40 reactions in three months (shown below).

On July 20th, TikToker[2] @savedannyy posted a photo slideshow using several photos of the dog, claiming its name is Danny. The captions on the photos explain that Danny encountered a porcupine and now needs $900 to get the quills removed, providing a CashApp handle at the end (shown below). The video gained over 6.9 million views in four days, with numerous commenters claiming they donated to the cause.

As the video went viral, other TikTokers began opening pages and posting videos using the same images of "Danny" to scam others out of money, providing unique CashApp handles in the last slide. These accounts include TikTokers[3][4][5][6] @cadence6846, @saveedanny, @help.danny7 and @helpsavedannypls. On July 22nd, 2023, the original scam account, @savedannyy, posted two videos. The first was a supposed update on Danny claiming that they still needed another $300, and the second was a video claiming they're legitimate and outing other Danny scam accounts, garnering over 730,000 and 492,000 views, respectively, in two days.

As more and more accounts opened using the Danny scam, other TikTokers began calling it out. For example, on July 23rd, TikToker[7] @noscopedeezcups posted a video revealing the post to be a scam, garnering over 120,000 views in a day (shown below, left). On the same day, TikToker[8] @noahglenncarter posted a video raising awareness of the scam, garnering over 171,000 views in a day (shown below, right). Additional TikTokers also began posting reactions and memes about the scam as it continued to spread in late July 2023.
