Tinned Fish refers to discussions and memes about the increase in tinned fish and artisanal tinned fish content on the internet after the year 2020. Discussions about hot girls eating tinned fish gained popularity on Twitter, likely due to pandemic-era stockpiling, and discussions about being influenced into buying artisanal and expensive tinned fish gained traction on TikTok in the latter half of 2022.
Origin
On August 11th, 2017, the subreddit /r/canned sardines was formed, now 27,000 readers strong and dedicated to discussing tinned fish and mussels.[9]
Several tweets referencing being "hot" and "eating tinned fish" gained traction in the year 2021, with the earliest viral tweet being posted by Twitter[1] user @laylology on March 23rd, 2021, and gathering over 4,000 likes in over a year (seen below, left).
On July 30th, 2021, Twitter[2] user @mollylambert posted a tweet about tinned fish, gathering over 1,000 likes in over a year (seen below, right).
A July 23rd, 2021 Nylon magazine article discusses the rise of tinned fish discourse on the internet.[10]

Discussions about tinned fish continued in 2021 and into the year 2022, with Twitter[3] user @ikeaduvet posting a joke about tinned fish on September 15th, 2021, gathering over 2,000 likes in over a year (seen below, left). On August 23rd, 2021, Twitter[4] user @gabydvj posted a tweet in reference to discourse about tinned fish, gathering over 11,000 likes in over a year (seen below, right).
Tinned fish began making an appearance on TikTok in 2022, with the earliest known viral video about artisanal tinned fish being posted on August 15th, 2022, by TikToker[5] @alihooke, gathering over 600,000 plays and 67,000 likes in over 6 months (seen below, left). Another notable early advocate of tinned fish was TikToker[6] @dzaslavsky, who posted a video eating tinned fish on October 19th, 2022, gathering over 2.2 million plays and over 180,000 likes in over two months (seen below, right).

On December 31st, 2022, TikToker[7] @katiesooyon posted a video reviewing tinned fish with her family, gathering over 200,000 plays and 29,000 likes in two weeks (seen below, left). On January 9th, 2023 TikToker[8] @allisonoconor posted a video saying that tinned fish discourse is indicative of an economic downturn, gathering over 600,000 plays and 117,000 likes in three days (seen below, right).
