Uncle is one of the oldest members of the Van der Linde gang. He is known to have a "serious medical condition" in which he cannot do anything. It is called lumbago (lower-back pain). Whilst at Beecher's Hope when it is a run down ranch before it was torn down and reconstructed. You can see Uncle lying down on the floor and John comes in saying "Working Hard." Uncle responds to it, "It's the lumbago, if I over do it I'll get a relapse, it's very serious," after him complaining that he cannot work because of his condition. John eventually kicks him in the back saying "GET UP!"

Uncle in Red Dead Redemption in 1911 he does not complain about his lumbago as it may have never been thought of when it came out in 2010 but Uncle is actually more useful in the second game then in the first game. You don't really see Uncle the only time you really interact with him is in missions while herding cows, horses, etc

Uncle makes a return in Rockstar Games' prequel Red Dead Redemption 2 released in October of 2018 he doesn't appear as often in missions. In the mission "An Honest Mistake" given by Molly O'Shea. Arthur will approach her and Molly will talk about Dutch. Uncle will interrupt the conversation between Arthur and Molly. Uncle states that he has a gift of "information" and Arthur will immediately decline the offer and then Uncle will blame it on his "serious medical condition". Arthur will tell him he is a "compulsive liar" then Uncle will ask Charles that if he has ever lied to him and Charles will respond "I hardly know you". Eventually Arthur, Bill and Charles will eventually get Uncle to ride out.
