Uncropped Memes or Generatived Fill Memes refers to a series of AI-Expanded Images and Photoshopped edits of popular memes showing the full background of the memorable images. The trend was popularized in May 2023, using artificial intelligence systems like DALL-E and Midjourney

Origin

On September 2nd, 2022, YouTuber[1] @pl9nt uploaded a video titled "Famous Memes and Photos Uncropped in DALL-E 2," in which he used the artificial intelligence tool DALL-E 2 to add background to popular memes like Doge and Grumpy Cat":https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/grumpy-cat. The video received roughly 1,700 views and 72 likes in a year.

On May 30th, 2023, x[2] user @LinusEkenstam posted a series of images powered by Photoshop's latest AI feature – Generative Fill, to create uncropped versions of Distracted boyfriend, Hide The Pain Harold, Disaster Girl and many other. The post (examples shown below) amassed over 10,000 likes and 1,800 retweets in six months.

The AI-generated meme images were also shared on Reddit. For instance, on September 2nd, 2022, Redditor[3] u/JeremiahPetersen uploaded an uncropped Doge image (shown below), amassing more than 2,600 upvotes and 74 comments in a year.
