Wash Your Hand After Playing With the Animals is a popular two-panel image macro that features a person shaking the paw for a dog, followed by a dog's paws being washed in a sink. The post has also been used in a variety of object labeling memes.

Origin

On July 13th, 2017, Imgur ^[1] user RoscaDaniel posted a stock photo ^[2] an image of a human and dog shaking hands with an image of a dog washing its paws in a sing directly below it. The picture is captioned, "Wash your hand after playing with the animals." This implies that the human is the animal, not the dog, subverting the expectation. The post (shown below) received more than 1,300 views in less than one year.

Spread

The following month, on August 6th, Facebook ^[3] posted a variation of the meme with a flag of the Soviet Union on the wrist of the human. The post (shown below, left) received more than 2,000 reactions, 150 shares and 490 comments.

Two weeks later, on August 19th, Instagram ^[4] user @__________gay__________ posted a version with the word "Barbz" on the wrist. The post (shown below, center) received more than 19,000 likes.

Several months later, Facebook^[5] user colddeadhands posted a version of the meme with the Antifa flag on the wrist of the human. The post (shown below, right) received more than 1,700 reactions and 780 reactions in four months.
