On December 18th, 2024, Redditor u/PeepsRebellion posted a meme to the subreddit /r/NintendoSwitch2^[1] titled "Switch 2 Size compared to a Water Buffalo" comparing a water buffalo to the alleged size of the Nintendo Switch 2 video game console, garnering over 1,100 upvotes in a month.

The post by u/PeepsRebellion inspired further memes associating water buffalos with the Switch 2 on the subreddit. For example, on December 18th, 2024, Redditor u/BertelTheTurtel made a post to /r/NintendoSwitch2^[2] titled "LEAKED: The C button lets you choose which water buffalo you want as your new Switch 2 avatar," garnering over 990 upvotes in a month.

On December 20th, Redditor u/RougeNapper posted an image to the subreddit^[3] compiling a variety of posts made to the subreddit about water buffalos, titled, "This sub has officially gone insane," garnering over 1,600 upvotes in three weeks.

On January 3rd, 2025, Redditor u/Illustrious-Main2301 posted a meme to /r/NintendoSwitch2^[4] parodying the Nintendo Has Forgotten About Mario video with a joke about water buffalos, garnering over 300 upvotes in a week.

On January 8th, 2025, Redditor u/MacksNotCool, a moderator for /r/NintendoSwitch2,^[5] made a post to the subreddit titled "Attention everyone: We're gonna pull a funny. We need YOUR help." The post encourages users of the subreddit to brigade the comment sections of videos uploaded by the Nintendo of America YouTube channel with jokes about water buffalos until the official reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2.

They also make it clear that the event is not meant to be hateful, encouraging participants to also like the video and watch it fully. The Reddit post gained over 2,900 upvotes in two days.

Over the following days, the comment sections of the most recent Nintendo of America YouTube videos became filled with comments about water buffalos, including videos for Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip, Emio – The Smiling Man and Blade Chimera (examples of comment sections seen below).
