About

We Don't Talk About Bruno's Rats refers to video edits of 2021 Disney animated film Encanto, particularly its hit song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" to emphasize Bruno's collection of pet rats. Edits referencing the meme have gained millions of views and were primarily popularized on YouTube in early 2022.

Origin

In Encanto, the character Bruno begins the film in exile while living with his pet rats. In the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno," the character Camilo describes Bruno with the lyric, "7-foot frame, rats along his back," which became one of the most prevalent lines in the song. On January 9th, 2022, Twitter user @KaiserNeko edited the song into "Seven-foot rats," gaining over 300 retweets and 1,200 likes in two months (shown below, top). Later that day, he further edited the clip into "seven-foot rats, rats along his rats," gaining over 1,000 retweets and 3,500 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, bottom).

Spread

On January 12th, 2022, KaiserNeko uploaded his video to YouTube (shown below, left), while coincidentally, YouTuber Northflowo uploaded a very similar video (shown below, right). There, they both went viral, gaining over 19 million views and 21 million views respectively over the span of two months.

The videos' success led to a surge in rat-based edits of Encanto and "We Don't Talk About Bruno." On January 12th, YouTuber SilvUno released a YouTube Poop that replaced every noun in the song with "rats," gaining over 200,000 views (shown below, left). On February 7th, YouTuber currentobsession posted an edit of the entire film that only showed Bruno's rats, gaining over 5,500 views (shown below, right). On March 8th, 2022, the meme was covered by Polygon.[1]
