When Life So Cooked You Gotta Pull Out This Combo is a catchphrase used in a series of caption memes that describe a low point in life (using the slang term "cooked") in which one would go to a specific set of comfort things, such as their favorite music and video game, in order to cope and destress. Started by a viral Grand Theft Auto meme, the format spread on social media in 2024.

Origin

On April 23rd, 2024, the Instagram[1][2] accounts lmao.gaming and demotedmemes posted a meme captioned, "When life so cooked you gotta pull out this combo," showing an image of the Grand Theft Auto 5 game map and the Spotify logo (author unknown; shown below). The posts received over 7,300 likes and 4,500 likes, respectively, in six months.

The post saw further spread through reposts on X,[3] Instagram[4] and Reddit[5] in the following months. On April 23rd, 2024, X[6] account @weirddalle reposted the image, with the post garnering over 16,000 reposts and 173,000 likes in six months.

Following the viral spread of the post, versions of the meme were posted on X, TikTok and other social media, with users replacing the GTA V map, Spotify logo or both with combinations of things that bring them comfort.

For example, on May 22nd, 2024, TikTok[7] user @binxrl posted a meme that received over 939,000 views and 382,000 likes in five months (shown below).
