About
Wuhan Kontol (English translation Fuck Wuhan) refers to a song by Indonesian local rapper Lil Mamat that disses Wuhan, China for causing the Covid-19 pandemic. The lyrics feature Lil Mamat complaining he can't eat, work, or gain money anymore due to the pandemic. The song was used in various memes in Indonesia and online as many people are upset with the virus and blame Wuhan for it.
Origin
On July 17th, 2021, YouTube user Bester TV[1] uploaded a song titled Lil Mamat – Wuhan K*NT*L that was sung by Lil Mamat. The song received more than 236,000 views in two weeks (shown below, left). The original upload itself was removed from YouTube, but a reverb + slowed version was uploaded on August 14th, 2021. It was noted that the musical tone comes from the song titled California by fellow Indonesian rapper Rich Brian[12], NIKI, and Warren Hue (shown below, right).
Spread
The song starting to gain popularity in Indonesia in the middle of July. On July 17th, 2021, the Facebook[2] user Yonko Yanke reposted the song with the lyrics. The video received more than 2,100 reactions and 2,400 shares (shown below).

On July 18th, 2021, YouTube[3] user It's Rahadi uploaded the earliest video to use lyrics from the song in meme form. The video received more than 31,000 views in two weeks (shown below). On July, 20th, 2021, Facebook[4] user Flxmeuwu reposted the video to the 'Sebuah grup facebook dimana kita berpura pura menjadi A M V M A K E R' group. The video received more than 2,700 reactions and 3,200 shares in one week.
On the same day, Facebook[5] user Chiro uploaded the When you're sad, your understand the lyrics meme in video format. The post received 322 reactions and 821 shares (shown below, left). On July 25th, 2021, Facebook[6] user Sebut Saja Abdul uploaded a scene from Spongebob Squarepants using edited sounds from the song. The video received more than 1,827 reactions and 2,734 shares (shown below, right).
On July 26th, 2021, Instagram[11] user @chikoo22_ uploaded a video that had a short clip of the song. The video received more than 6,500 views in one week (shown below).
#WuhanKontol
#WuhanKontol refers to the hashtag that became popular in Indonesian circles. On July 24th, 2021, the Facebook[7] page Garuda Fighters accused the Chinese media site China Daily[8] of mocking Indonesia by saying "Indonesia only prioritized Badminton in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics." (shown below, left). On July 30th, 2021, Twitter[9] user @ispeispewayae uploaded a screenshot of the Facebook page Justified Jokowi Memes commenting "daripada nyumbang virus #wuhankontol" (English translation: better than donating virus) as a counter. The tweet received more than 2,900 retweets and 16,000 likes. The next day, Facebook[10] user Nisa Azzahra reposted the image and received more than 3,300 reactions and 6,300 shares (shown below, right).
