Yeah Sex Is Cool But is a phrasal template in which people share the things, both sincere and satirical, that they prefer to sexual intercourse. The phrase "yeah, sex is cool, but…" is succeeded by something that the author prefer to sex.
Origin
While the phrase has likely been used offline, the earliest known instance of the phrase being used on social media was posted on February 16th, 2011 by Twitter [1] user @DrewDemm (shown below, left). That day, they posted "Yeah, sex is cool… but I don't want only that. Is this that hard to understand? I want something serious… not only fuckfriends. :(."
The earliest example of someone using the phrase ironically was posted by Twitter[2] user @isaackmusic on May 29th, 2013, who posted (shown below, right) "Yeah sex is cool but have you ever had stuffed crust pizza."
Spread
On February 27th, 2015, Twitter[3] user @pakalupapito tweeted, "sex is cool but have u ever had garlic bread." The post received more than 9,600 retweets and 12,000 likes in nearly three years.
Several months later, a Redditor [4] (now deleted) posted a mock tweet by rapper DMX, which read "YEAH SEX IS COOL BUT HAVE YOU EVER HAD GARLIC BREAD." The post (shown below) received more than 19,000 points (94% upvoted) and 200 comments in nearly three years.
On August 19th, 2017, Twitter[5] @HunterLares tweeted, "Yeah sex is cool but have you ever shown someone art you made and had them get more excited about it than you expected?" The post (shown below, left) received more than 41,000 retweets and 140,000 likes in four months.
Several months later on November 17th, Twitter[6] user @drumforge tweeted, "yeah sex is cool but have you tried washing your dishes right after you use them so they never pile up in the sink???" The post (shown below, center) received more than 56,000 retweets and 200,000 likes in less than three weeks.
On December 5th, Twitter[6] @taylvr tweeted, "Yeah sex is cool and all but have you ever dialed (+1) 202-759-7593 to let your senators know that you oppose the repeal of net neutrality." Within three days, the tweet (shown below, right) received more than 100,000 retweets and 190,000 likes.
In December 2017, the template was covered by several media outlets, including Teen Vogue,[7] Mashable,[8] Bustle[9] and more. On December 8th, Twitter[10] published a Moments page on the meme.
