You Did An Imperialism refers to a copypasta popular on Twitter spawned by a woman who scolded author Barbara Ehrenreich for a joke made in poor taste about cleanliness icon Marie Kondo. After Ehrenreich tried to say her joke was a failed subtle attempt at humor, user @TheVelvetDays posted, "You did a racism. You did an imperialism. You did a nationalism. You did a xenophobia. You did a white fragility. You did a weak apology. You did no growth. This makes it abundantly clear you don't understand the intersectional nature of the multiplicity of your offenses." The copypasta has been regularly posted on Twitter since in mockery of aggressive and cringeworthy scolding.

Origin

On February 4th, 2019, author Barbara Ehrenreich posted a since-deleted tweet that read, "I will be convinced that America is not in decline only when our de-cluttering guru Marie Kondo learns to speak English."[1] She later attempted to brush off the backlash she received by claiming it was a failed subtle attempt at humor. In response, user @TheVelvetDays posted, "You did a racism. You did an imperialism. You did a nationalism. You did a xenophobia. You did a white fragility. You did a weak apology. You did no growth. This makes it abundantly clear you don't understand the intersectional nature of the multiplicity of your offenses" (shown below). The tweet has since been deleted.

The tweet began seeing use as a copypasta in the following months on Twitter, often with one sentence changed for humorous effect. For example, on February 10th, 2019, @nopoweradeinusa[2] posted a Stop Right There, Criminal Scum parody of the tweet, gaining over 470 likes (shown below, left). On June 26th, user @victoriaxxviii[3] tweeted the copypasta and added "You did at least 200-300 whippits during one semester at college," gaining over 160 likes (shown below, right).

The copypasta continued to see use into 2020. On May 10th, 2020, user @bitch_updates[4] used the copypasta, adding "you did a be mean to Chrissy Tiegen", gaining over 120 retweets and 2,500 likes (shown below, left). On August 25th, user @aniceburrito[5] joked, "Me and the boys have this family surrounded. Theyre trying to eat fully loaded potato skins over the sound of us chanting 'You did a racism. You did an imperialism. You did a xenophobia. You did a white fragility. You did a weak apology. You did a no growth,' gaining over 260 likes (shown below, right).
