About

You Must Acquire A Taste For Freeform Jazz is a quote said by Patrick Star in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. In the scene, Patrick is attempting to show SpongeBob how to act more like an adult, suggesting "you must acquire a taste for freeform jazz" before the pair listen to experimental jazz music. Since the early 2010s, the clip has been parodied by YouTubers by replacing the jazz in the clip with other genres of music or humorous songs.

Origin

In the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Grandma's Kisses," aired on April 28th, 2001,[1] SpongeBob wants to act more adult-like in front of his grandmother. He turns to Patrick for advice, who tells SpongeBob to puff out his chest, say "tax exemption" and that he must acquire a taste for freeform jazz. The pair then listen to an excerpt from the song "Pressure Point" by Duncan Lamont[2] while maintaining thoughtful expressions. On May 5th, 2007, YouTuber Patrick Neil uploaded the scene to YouTube, where it gained over 4.5 million views in 15 years (shown below).

Spread

Over the following 15 years, the clip was widely edited with different music replacing "Pressure Point." For example, on January 22nd, 2013, YouTuber pokedude900 posted a video replacing the song with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure OP2, gaining over 58,000 views in roughly nine years (shown below, left). On January 29th, 2018, YouTuber MaxLP posted a variation replacing the track with Hit's theme from Dragon Ball FighterZ, gaining over 122,000 views in four years (shown below, left).

On March 7th, 2018, YouTuber n0p0inter posted a video replacing the track with a different jazz piece, gaining over 71,000 views in four years (shown below, right). On April 8th, 2021, YouTuber Linkhe's Dump posted a variation replacing "Pressure Point" with a breakcore song, gaining over 86,000 views in one year (shown below, left).
