About

Your Last Text is Democrats' 2018 Slogan is a social game popular on Twitter starting in August of 2017 where users post the last text message they sent and say it will be the Democrats' campaign slogan in the 2018 midterm elections. The game started after several stories about Democrats' highly-criticized ideas for slogans had surfaced in the previous weeks.

Origin

On August 2nd, 2017, Twitter user @MattNegrin[1] posted a tweet that read "The last text you sent is the Democrats' slogan for 2018." The tweet gained over 850 retweets and 3,900 likes in one day (shown below). The tweet came after stories of the Democrats' ideas for official campaign slogan which were highly mocked. On July 5th, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent out ideas for slogans via email that many considered feckless, leading to parodies of the email. Then, on July 20th, it was leaked that their slogan would be “A Better Deal: Better Skills. Better Jobs. Better Wages,” which was also mocked online.

Spread

Responses to Negrin's tweet came quickly. The most popular tweets playing the game echoed the haplessness of the Democrats' actual ideas for slogans. For example, Twitter user @yourpaltim[2] posted a joke making fun of Democrats' performance in the 2016 United States Presidential Election, gaining over 220 retweets and 1,700 likes (shown below, left). User @npenny[3] posted a similar joke that gained over 230 retweets and 1,300 likes (shown below, right). The following day, the jokes were posted to Twitter Moments.[4] Buzzfeed,[5] Washington Examiner,[6] and others picked up the story as well.
