Last night, news broke that comedian Dave Chappelle tested positive for COVID-19, canceling the remainder of his scheduled shows in Austin, Texas this week where he was slated to perform five nights at the Stubbs Waller Creek Amphitheater from Wednesday to Sunday.
A representative for Chappelle confirmed the report in a statement and said he has tested positive and is quarantining, but has not yet suffered any symptoms and appears to be asymptomatic. The remaining four shows, two of which were also slated to have Joe Rogan perform, have all been canceled with plans to reschedule or refund tickets.
“Chappelle has safely conducted socially-distanced shows in Ohio since June 2020 and he moved those shows to Austin during the winter,” the rep said. “Chappelle implemented COVID-19 protocols which included rapid testing for the audience and daily testing for himself and his team. His diligent testing enabled him to immediately respond by quarantining, thus mitigating the spread of the virus. Chappelle is asymptomatic.”
After performing the first of his five shows in Austin Wednesday night, images of Chappelle began trending online where he was seen posing for a photo with Joe Rogan, Michelle Wolf, Donnell Rawlings, Ron White, Mathieu Bitton, Mohammed Amer, Elon Musk and Grimes, which some criticized for their lack of masks.
On January 9th, Grimes reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus where she said via an Instagram Story that she “finally got COVID but [was] weirdly enjoying the DayQuil fever dream.”
Given the recommendation of two weeks in quarantine for those who test positive for the virus, Grimes’ appearance with Chappelle and other attendees at the comedy show have led some to speculate that she may have given him COVID, though the timeline doesn’t match.
Rogan later commented on the rumor and said on social media, “Because people are asking, I was not exposed to the person who had covid and I have tested negative every day this week. Also, the person that gave covid to Dave was NOT Elon’s partner, Grimes.”
