Did Marjorie Taylor Greene Audition For 'American Idol'? The Answer May Not Surprise You

Marjorie Taylor Greene was forced to clarify that she does not have the sick singing and dancing skills of one Stefanie Sugarman after a recent clip purportedly of the controversial congresswoman auditioning for American Idol went viral on social media.

Here's how the story developed: on February 4th, 2009, YouTuber Cherokee Dawn uploaded "Bad American Idol Audition – Stefanie Sugarman," showing Sugarman bombing an audition in the show's early days. On September 3rd, YouTuber Farron Balanced posted a video saying a viewer gave him a tip theorizing that Sugarman could potentially be Marjorie Taylor Greene performing under a stage name.

Farron Balanced admits the resemblance between Sugarman and Greene is "uncanny," but said he did not believe Sugarman was Greene. He pointed out that in the audition, Sugarman is said to be 23, which, considering the first season of American Idol aired in 2002, would mean she was born in 1978 at the earliest. Marjorie Taylor Greene was born in 1974.

The video (and not Farron Balanced's conclusion) made its way onto /r/Hasan_Piker, where it was presumably picked up by Twitter user @FLKDayton, who uncritically claimed it was Greene's audition tape. That claim began spreading on the site, which led news publications to track down the facts disproving the hoax.

TMZ first tracked down Sugarman, and found a California woman by the same name who shares a birthday with the contestant in the video (Greene never lived in California). The New York Post got Greene's reps to deny the claim. They called it "Blue Anon nonsense."

Snopes discovered that Sugarman is still singing and tracked down Sugarman's actual talent managers, who confirmed that the woman in the video is indeed her. They stated that the video does not represent Sugarman's talent and that she actually has a "very soulful" voice.

Caught spreading misinformation, @FLKDayton admitted he saw the video on Reddit and repeated the claim he saw there. "You guys can stop clutching your pearls over dishonoring your favorite christofascist," he wrote.
