'Ice Age' Squirrel Scrat Finally Gets His Acorn As His Animation Studio, Blue Sky Studios, Closes Down
Blue Sky Studios, the team behind the Ice Age films, closed down last year due to the economic impact of COVID-19, but in one last short released today, they've finally allowed Scrat, the company's scrappy squirrel mascot, to eat the acorn he's been chasing for years in a bittersweet ending.
Scrat finally gets the acorn as a farewell to Blue Sky Studios.
“In the final days of Blue Sky Studios, a small team of artists came together to do one final shot. This shot is a farewell, a send-off on our own terms.” pic.twitter.com/Z9QmNEX4x1— DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) April 13, 2022
Blue Sky Studios introduced Scrat in 2002's Ice Age and the character's ill-fated attempts to capture his beloved acorn were a staple of the franchise. Throughout the studio's existence, they crafted more elaborate shorts around Scrat's quest to catch an acorn and released them as pre-movie shorts ahead of other films the studio made, such as Rango and The Peanuts Movie.
The short proved surprisingly touching for social media users, who felt unexpected pangs of nostalgia seeing the sabertoothed squirrel finally achieve his dream. On Reddit, several top posts on the /r/memes subreddit are about the bittersweetness of the video.
Similar sentiments and reactions to Scrat's finale were shared on Twitter by numerous users.
Wow. The Blue Sky team came together to do this one final shot as a farewell to the studio and gave its most recognizable character the ending he deserves.

Scrat actually eating the nut gave me more emotional closure than the entire Infinity Saga https://t.co/iFGTWa6nGM

Disney purchased Blue Sky Studios in 2019 and the studio officially closed in 2021. The company was still working on several projects, including a series called Ice Age: Scrat Tales for Disney+, which coincidentally released the same day Blue Sky Studios released their farewell short. As Disney now owns the Ice Age IP, the franchise could continue, albeit without Blue Sky's contributions, as well as the voice acting of much of the original cast.
