Britney Spears' father Jamie Spears has agreed to step down from the position as her conservator, giving the pop star and the Free Britney Movement something to cheer about.

Jamie has been widely seen as the villain in the eyes of #FreeBritney supporters, as Spears has accused her father of conservatorship abuse and previously petitioned the Los Angeles Superior Court to have him removed from the position.

While this is good news for the #FreeBritney camp, there are still a series of legal and financial hurdles put up by Jamie's camp that will have to be cleared before Jamie steps down. For starters, there is not yet a timeline on when the resignation will take place.

"Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and include a resolution of matters pending before the court," wrote Jamie's attorney Vivian Thoreen in the court document announcing his intent to resign.

Furthermore, according to lawyer Christopher Melcher, who is not involved with the case but spoke to Fox News as a legal expert, "What Jamie Spears filed today is by no means an unconditional resignation… He’s asking for $1.2 million in attorney fees and additional compensation." Melcher added, "It’s inappropriate for him to condition his resignation on receiving material benefits," and called the filing more of a "condition of surrender."

On August 5th, Britney's lawyer Mathew Rosengart filed a statement saying Jamie "'seeks compensation' from Ms. Spears -- of $1,356,293 in attorney’s fees from Oct. 17, 2020, to June 30, 2021, including a shocking and inexplicable $541,065.50 for 'Media Matters.'" It appears the request for financial compensation may be part of what is holding up the official resignation of Jamie as Britney's conservator, and it's unknown whether Rosengart will agree to the demands.

Nevertheless, Rosengart seemed positive in a statement given to NPR.

"We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others. We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter's estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears's sworn deposition in the near future."

For her part, Britney posted a video of herself dancing after the news dropped, and though she did not make explicit mention of the ongoing case in her Instagram caption, fans interpreted it as a celebratory gesture.
