Originally captured by paparazzi way back in 2010, Keanu Reeves has finally explained the circumstances that led to what is arguably his most iconic meme: Sad Keanu.

In a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Reeves finally spilled the beans: he was simply hungry.

During the interview, Reeves said, "I was thinking. I had some stuff going on. I was hungry."

Looking at the photo, Reeves' explanation makes perfect sense. It's difficult to look truly happy if you're absentmindedly eating a sandwich, but the starkness of the photo really drives home the idea that Keanu is sad.

Colbert also pointed out that the Sad Keanu meme appears in BRZRKR, Keanu's comic book.

"I think it's kind of meta," Reeves said. "That's life in art."
