North Korean state media released a propaganda video of yesterday’s intercontinental ballistic missile launch, which featured dictator Kim Jong Un strolling in slow motion while sporting sunglasses and a black leather jacket — a moment as terrifying as it was memeable.

As “Kim Jong Un” trended on Twitter and other platforms today, many commentators pointed out the similarity between Kim’s video and the film Top Gun. The rather hokey editing style involves a lot of zooms, slow-motion shots of Kim and his generals and a lively action-movie-style soundtrack.

Some users humorously pointed out how “hard” Kim Jong Un looked in the video and compared him to other sunglasses-sporting characters. Bizarre propaganda content featuring the brutal North Korean dictator has inspired many memes in the past, including Kim Jong Un Looking Through Binoculars and his reported health scares that have also inspired frequent meme speculation.

North Korea’s missile launch happened while leaders of the NATO alliance like President Joe Biden met in Europe to discuss the war in Ukraine and the future of their bloc. South Korea has also recently elected a more hardline government, which promises to take a more assertive stance towards North Korea. These events are theorized to have something to do with North Korea's decision to launch the missile now.

This latest missile is the largest and most powerful that North Korea has ever launched, and experts believe that it can probably reach cities in the United States. The government of North Korea shared that the large ICBM is intended to help in what they called a “long confrontation” with the United States that is “inevitable.” The ICBM was launched into the sea, where it travelled farther and longer than any previous North Korean test. According to Reuters, it may have been the largest liquid-fueled missile ever launched from a road-mobile launcher.

So while the new North Korean nuclear missile may be promoted like a 1980s action movie, it could, very possibly, lead to a nuclear crisis and yet another historic event for the 2020s.
