A man is bravely pushing into a new frontier of "boyfriend-caught-cheating excuses," claiming that the high altitude of Utah suddenly made him gay, according to a rapidly trending /r/AITAH post on Reddit.

Here's a brief summary of the post: A woman learns that her boyfriend of three years cheated on her with a man while on a work trip in Utah. As far as she knew, her boyfriend was completely straight.

Upon questioning him about this matter, he claimed "the strangest thing" happened to him, saying that he "suddenly became gay… due to the altitude." He argued that "higher altitudes can have an impact on how people think, and on their emotions, and… that the high altitude made him gay, temporarily." "As soon as he landed back home he was 'back to being straight,'" according to the poster.

When the woman stated she was breaking up with him due to the infidelity, he argued he couldn't be blamed for his actions because "human actions are just a byproduct of accidental brain chemistry" and that "his chemistry had been altered, through no fault of [his] own, due to the higher altitudes of Utah." This line of reasoning led the poster to wonder if they were overreacting.

Men coming up with ridiculous excuses for infidelity has long been a trope in popular culture, but "the altitude made me gay, and therefore I cannot be blamed by my actions in Utah" might be impossible to top, at least according to thousands of commenters who agreed that OP was not the "AH" in this situation.

Unfortunately, there's no way to verify that the post is genuine. It was posted by a throwaway account created yesterday, and they have not commented with more detail in the massive ensuing thread. Some /r/AITAH users suspect the post is made up, as they do with many of the posts on the subreddit.

While not confirmed, /r/AITAH has long been suspected of being a place where people go on the internet and tell lies due to the ludicrousness of situations described in some of the sub's most popular posts.

"My boyfriend says the high altitude made him gay" is certainly ludicrous enough to suggest the post could be a fabrication, or it might just be ludicrous enough to mean it must be true.

It's an incredible story nonetheless, and if it is indeed made up, it will be difficult for another creative writer to come up with a more entertainingly ridiculous excuse for infidelity.
