Truly, nothing brings the internet together like gathering 'round a failed "how-to-cook" video and roasting it to death (heck, Gordon Ramsay has made a third career off it). Today, the brave but severely misguided soul offering their recipe to the internet is actress Paula Patton, who made several "unforgivable" errors in the eyes of many while preparing "her mother's fried chicken" recipe.

Posted yesterday, the video went viral after Olympian athlete Ashley Spencer reacted to the clip on TikTok, receiving thousands of likes and comments.

The video starts off in a weird place, with Patton noting that step one is "wash the chicken." There has been some debate on whether or not one should wash chicken before cooking it, and the CDC recommends against it. Even so, Patton merely runs the chicken under cold water, which would do basically nothing in terms of "cleaning" chicken.

Things begin getting alarming for culinary enthusiasts when Patton starts breading the chicken before seasoning it. "Where's the seasoning?," wonders Spencer for about 30 seconds as Patton coats and drops her chicken into the hot oil. Finally, Spencer receives her answer when Patton begins seasoning the chicken as it's in the oil. To understand the bizarreness of this, note that most fried chicken recipes say one should include seasonings in an egg mixture and dip the chicken into that first, then dip the chicken into the flour coating, which also includes seasoning.

"YOU'RE SEASONING GREASE!" cries Spencer, as Patton unloads paprika into, well, grease.

The video left social media stunned, particularly Black Twitter users who seemed to consider Patton's recipe a crime against fried chicken.

Of course, we have no idea how Patton's fried chicken actually tasted. Perhaps pouring pounds of paprika into grease somehow created a transcendent fried chicken experience. At the moment, it seems like we'll never know, as Patton has not responded to her newfound viral infamy.
