Pixar's 'Lightyear' Movie Becomes Latest Banned In Multiple Countries For LGBTQ Representation
Pixar has found itself in a tight spot over the newest movie Lightyear that is slated to come out later in the week. Ahead of its release, the film was prematurely banned in several countries for having a lesbian kiss happen in the movie, a move that has followed recent Marvel and Star Wars trends with including these elements to their respective films.
The news of the bans quickly appeared on Twitter, where people living in each country affected were upset at the news.
I'm so sad Lightyear is banned here in Malaysia 🥲

Looks like we got confirmation on the LGBTQ+ representation in Pixar's Lightyear
The film hits theaters next week, an is subsequently banned from some countries like China. pic.twitter.com/Ui4lDbJbad— TRAFON (@RiseFallNickBck) June 11, 2022

Not everyone was upset at the news, however, as presumably, with a government deciding to ban something from a nation, there are some within the country that would agree with the decision. These supporting voices were quick to point their anger towards Disney itself for presumably forcing the content to be in the movie, knowing that previously it resulted in similar country-wide bans.
So they banned “Lightyear” in Lebanon because it has a same sex kiss?
I hope this would fix the economic, political and all kind of crisis we’re going through ❤️🥰

Disney distributor in the middle east is telling me that #Lightyear has been banned in Lebanon and many other countries for LGBT scenes. At this rate, Disney will not release anything in the middle east anymore.

A step in the right direction by UAE. Putting same-sex references and suggestions in children movies is child brainwashing. I'm thoroughly disappointed in Pixar and Disneyhttps://t.co/JeEyqeU5tV

I wish you could've kept the forced agenda out of our beloved animations. pic.twitter.com/ZkpMrfFxFF— K A R E E M (@amameerak) June 12, 2022
While many were busy trying to fight on either side, there were others focused on the meta-narrative at play with the banning, such as what it might mean for Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as making jokes about how the movie was truly deserving of the ban for various reasons.
No wonder the new Buzz Lightyear movie is banned in UAE. pic.twitter.com/HNaODZ4Y5B
