The "San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus" (SFGMC), the world's first openly gay chorus, is receiving internet-wide backlash after posting a music video for a satirical song featuring lyrics about "converting your children" titled "A Message From The Gay Community." They've now responded, saying conservative media is taking the lyrics out of context, and that it is actually about converting kids to be more tolerant.

The song was posted to the web on July 1st where it spread across social media over the course of the week, inspiring anger in a number of people who failed to see the comedy behind it. Conservative media took particular interest in the work, criticizing it as an example of the left trying to corrupt the youth.

Beyond simply calling the song out as irresponsible, though, some have taken the situation a step further and accused various members of the group of being sex offenders. An ongoing thread by Twitter user @TimeCommando with over 1,000 retweets and 4,000 likes at the time of writing shows a number of searches on the Megan's Law website, a site that allows you to search for members of the sex offender registry, coinciding with chorus members' names, insinuating that these are the same people. This has not been confirmed though, and many have pointed out that these could be different people.

The chorus took the video down after receiving heavy criticism, including death threats according to a statement released through the SFGMC's Twitter account yesterday. In the statement, SFGMC members Tim, Chris and Glenn claim that "far-right conservative media" have "taken the lyrics out of context to support a narrative that suits their intolerant and hateful needs." This is reflected in the lyrics:

Learn to vogue
Face your fate!
We'll convert your children
Someone's gotta teach them not to hate
We're coming for them
We're coming for your children
We're coming for them

The chorus is still taking a lot of heat online but continues to defend their song as satire.
