Twitter Is Dunking On Mumford & Sons Banjo Player Quitting Band In Order To Post With Impunity
Winston Marshall, the banjo player of pop-folk quartet Mumford and Sons, just published a lengthy Medium essay on his decision to quit the band after receiving blowback for tweeting in support of Andy Ngo, a photojournalist accused of exaggerating claims of Antifa violence and far-left extremism in the past.
In March, Marshall tweeted, "Congratulations @MrAndyNgo. Finally had the time to read your important book. You’re a brave man," referencing Ngo's book Unmasked. This apparently rankled Twitter users, as Marshall testified he received "tens of thousands of angry retweets and comments."
"I failed to foresee that my commenting on a book critical of the Far-Left could be interpreted as approval of the equally abhorrent Far-Right," he continued.
Marshall explains that while the group invited him to stay, he believed continuing to play with the band while self-censoring to avoid getting himself into social media trouble would gnaw at his conscience, hence his decision to leave.
This all seemed rather overdramatic martyrdom to Twitter users, particularly a moment where Marshall wrote, "I’ve had plenty of abuse over the years. I’m a banjo player after all."
Going to make fun of my Mumford & Sons fan sister so hard for the one guy leaving the band because he's too big a fan of Andy Ngo to keep on playing the banjo. I'll have to explain who Andy Ngo is but after that it's off to the races

After thinking on it for several hours, I’ve decided that the Mumford banjo guy quitting the band so he can tweet with impunity is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard

imagine being a rich white guy with the easiest gig playing banjo for mumford and sons bc you only need to learn to play like 4 things and giving that up to be extra rich and white with a side of persecution complex

There is no word yet on who will pick up the banjo for Mumford and Sons.
