Twitter Is Mad At Twitter For Being Mad At Dunkey Again

Dunkey youtuber meme.

YouTuber and hot take crafter VideoGameDunkey did what he usually does and released a video about a recent game, this time being Xenoblade Chronicles 3. As expected, Dunkey stuck to his guns and continued to lean into his persona that has a long history of self-admitted dislike for JRPGS, which Xenoblade squarely falls into.

Also, as expected, some on Twitter erupted in a sea of uproar over the video game review and began to get angry at Dunkey, apparently enough to cause him to become trending on the platform. The primary part of the anger, however, stems from his use of spoilers in his video without warning, with the game just being released a little over a month ago.

This, however, created a counter backlash against Twitter, by Twitter. As usual, people began to call out others for going too far in their hatred of Dunkey, with one Twitter artist pointing out that the numerous caricatures of Dunkey done in a way to shame and upset him are really just done in bad taste and shouldn't be how things are done.

Others began pointing out how Dunkey not liking the JRPG doesn't impact the game in the slightest for those who do enjoy it, and that Twitter drama like this solves nothing. This also became a rallying point for people who are just mad at anime and JRPG fans, with Dunkey possibly gaining allies by virtue of shared dislike of Xenoblade.

In the end, it seems Dunkey was able to post and laugh off the situation, which is just one of multiple he has caused in the past by not wholly agreeing with the opinion of a large part of social media, with his most recent example being his liking of Last of Us 2.

This, in turn, has caused some people to label Dunkey a contrarian, who knows that cherrypicking and posting hot takes about small parts of the game will just lead to this exact thing happening, effectively admitting that Dunkey knows how to game the system.

Important to note for context for the rest of this comment that he started the video off with "Twitter's gonna be mad at me again" or something like that.

The video itself was fine and from what I've seen most people don't even have a problem with it beyond showing late-game spoilers (and saying in the video what those spoilers are) all the way up to the final area in the game. The reaction from Xenoblade fans on Twitter just seemed to be comparable to a collective, audible sigh. It made some people upset but the outrage didn't start until Dunkey made a now-deleted tweet where he dropped a big spoiler from the game's ending, un-spoiler tagged. That's when the Xenoblade fans got pissed. Then he made a tweet basically saying "See? Twitter is mad at my video, just like I said they would be!" even though it's not the video the fans are mad about. Basically baiting Xenoblade fans into getting mad and baiting his audience into thinking he was right at the same time.

I'm not upset about it (I'll admit a part of me found it a bit funny), but I still think it was a dick move.

How the mighty have fallen. Dunkey used to rely purely on parody and comedy to stay relevant, and now every time we hear something from him, it is just him being the Schrodinger's asshole about whatever JRPG he played last. This is game journalist levels of disingenous tactics to get clicks and attention.
