Twitter's rebrand to “X” formally happened this morning and has so far been met with widespread backlash from many users.

While aspects like the basic new logo, perceived brand damage and bizarre new vocabulary have been widely criticized, many users also noted that "X" makes anything related to the site sound like adult content.

As many internet users know, the adult entertainment online space is filled with websites that prominently feature "X" in the title. This is because of the MPAA's 1968 ruling. that gave films age recommendations — "R" for "restricted" content, "X" for "extreme."

Anyone looking for such adult content has long been able to find it using search terms like "X images" or "X videos" (and in the latter case, they'd likely end up on a well-known video-hosting website). Should Twitter's "X" rebrand hold, attempts to find media hosted on the website will likely not come up with the same results searches as "Twitter pictures" and "Twitter videos" would.

This seemed like yet another "masterful gambit" on the part of Elon Musk to former-Twitter-now-X users, who couldn't believe that the site's owner had missed the letter X's obvious connotation with adult-oriented content.

The rebrand notably harkens back to Musk's days at PayPal. Back then, Musk wanted to name the online payment site "x.com," but it led to harsh disagreements among the company's brass due to the name's association with adult content. Musk was ousted from the company shortly after and it's been PayPal ever since.
