U.S. Open Cup Bans Salt Bae For Being Annoying At World Cup

Nearly six years since he went viral for putting salt on steak in a kind of funny way, Nusret Gökçe, aka Salt Bae, is still somehow generating headlines.

The Turkish restaurateur most recently recaptured the public eye after somehow making his way onto the pitch during Argentina's victory celebration for winning the 2022 World Cup, then grabbing the trophy from players and posing with it for pictures.

This angered many, as many people had no idea why an ancient meme was trying to steal the limelight from Lionel Messi and the other Argentinian players celebrating their monumental achievement. In addition to being annoying, it also broke FIFA rules, as the organization states only champions and heads of state can touch the trophy.

While FIFA may have screwed up by letting Salt Bae onto the pitch for the big celebration, one organization will be having none of his shenanigans: The U.S. Open Cup, a tournament many Americans were surprised to learn exists but is, in fact, the National Championship tournament for soccer (not to be confused with the MLS cup).

While many were sure this meant next to nothing to Salt Bae, people nevertheless cheered the U.S. Open Cup's decision. Granted, many thought the U.S. Open Cup was for another sport, but they had the spirit anyway.
