About
What's Hello Kitty for Guys is a catchphrase referenced in a series of posts that suggest various media that can be described as filling the same niche as the Hello Kitty media franchise does for girls. Spawned by a viral Tumblr post, the posts achieved prominence in mid-October 2024 following a question posted on X / Twitter that sparked a viral debate on the platform.
Origin
On May 8th, 2022, Tumblr[1] user crazy-brazilian posted an image of Apu Apustaja (Pepe the Frog) frolicking in a swamp captioned, "Just realized this silly frog is basically Hello Kitty for boys." The post (shown below) garnered over 5,800 likes and reblogs in three years.
On September 26th, 2024, X[1] user @SweetTea162 wrote, "Sonic the Hedgehog is basically Hello Kitty for guys," with the post gaining over 60 likes in three weeks (shown below).
Later on the same day, Tumblr[2] user e-z-squeeze replied to the post with a photograph of a restroom in which Hello Kitty was used to mark a bathroom for girls and Apu Apustaja was used on a bathroom for boys (shown below).
On October 12th, 2024, X[3] / Twitter user @missmilkton wrote, "girls are obsessed with hello kitty, what’s hello kitty for guys?" The post (shown below) garnered over 2 million views, 640 reposts and quote posts and 1,500 likes in two days.
Spread
In the following days, multiple users on X replied to the post and quoted it with suggestions of various media and phenomena that could be filling the same niche for boys as Hello Kitty does for girls.
For example, on October 12th, 2024, X[4] user @DANKCHAINS replied, "Dragon ball Z," with the reply gaining over 250 likes in two days (shown below).
Later on October 12th, 2024, X[5] user @JigokuCake posted a Soyjak image with the implication that the Soyjak and Wojak memes match the answer. The post (shown below) received over 3,700 reposts and 48,000 likes in two days (shown below).
More quote posts suggesting various media as Hello Kitty for guys were shared on X / Twitter in mid-October 2024.
