Woman Pictured In The Viral Girl Explaining Meme Explains The Origins And Her Reaction To Sudden Internet Fame

Recently revitalized meme Girl Explaining, which previously went viral in Spanish-speaking meme circles circa 2019, has been making its way to nearly every timeline on social media and meme pages over the past week.

Also going by the name of "Bro Girl" and "Girlsplaining," we dove into researching the format this week in order to get to the bottom of what exactly was being said in the original. Through our search, we managed to find the woman depicted in the photo, whose real name is Denise "Denu" Sanchez, and learned just what was going on that night in 2019.

When asked about the location and time behind the original picture, with the earliest known upload of the photo being on February 4th, 2019, Sanchez was able to recall and shed light that the photo "was on a night out! In Argentina, the name was Chau Che, in 2018," referring to the Buenos Aires club Chau Che Clu.

As for who she was talking to, Sanchez told us, "He was my boyfriend at the time, now he's my ex." The reason for the photo being taken of them was "another girl took a photo and we were behind them," meaning that while Sanchez and her ex, named Alfre, weren't the focus of the picture, they quickly became the center of attention after the meme started to make the rounds originally in 2019.

When the meme first started to circulate in 2019, her reaction was very positive, stating, "I was featured in the newspaper in my city, many people followed me on Instagram, and people have written me and asked how it happened."

Unfortunately, however, there was some bad that came from it as well. This is because, as a result of the depiction of her in the meme, Sanchez said, "They have treated me like a toxic girlfriend too! Hahaha. It's funny to see how people draw conclusions from a photo and think they know a lot about how you are!"

Despite this portrayal and misconstrued perception from the meme, Sanchez told us that she is now happily involved with a new boyfriend and her "friends laugh a lot whenever I mention it and they were surprised when I started to get famous."

This all took place before in 2019 when the meme was still circulating primarily within Spanish-speaking meme circles. This week, however, it crossed over into English meme circles, kicking the meme up a notch in terms of recognition, spread and sheer examples.

When asked about her feelings on the format crossing over to English memers, a language and culture she added that she isn't a part of, her response was, "I honestly had no idea that the meme resurfaced again and I never realized the huge number of people who saw it! It makes me laugh a lot when everyone is surprised that it's me. Now I dyed my hair black so it's harder for them to recognize me, but yes, it's me!"
