With the exception of Rose, most of the Gems in the series seem to be either completely flat (Pearl, Lapis, Peridot) or have a sort of mono-boob with no visible cleavage (Opal, Garnet, Amethyst, Jasper, Sugilite). This has created a school of thought that the Gems are designed to have monoboobs instead of separate breasts. And Tumblr fandom being Tumblr fandom, this created a school of thought within that school of thought that claimed that anyone who drew the Gems with separate breasts was some kind of creepy canon-defiling lustmachine, or erasing the plight of the unfortunate mono-boobed woman that Steven Universe was providing valuable representation of, or something along those lines.

The creators, as ever, have taken the position of "Eh, if you see it that way, sure."
