IMO Why Pearl couldn't catch Jasper. (self.stevenuniverse) submitted 3 hours ago by Director_Bison Everyone has made the joke that Pearl could have just shape shifted. but could she really have? Amethyst is great at shifting her whole body and Garnet has been shown being capable of stretching her arms out more then once but i don't think Pearl has ever actually been shown shape shifting. (if she has I don't remember it) True she did said that all Gems can shape shift if they choose. but I think it's safe to assume Pearl isn't comfortable with needlessly changing her shape and that she rarely if ever does so. While it is possible Pearl COULD have shape shifted her arms the same way Garnet has. If you watch the seen again she only has the span of 3 seconds to full process the situation and react to it. I doubt Pearl has the experience or instinct to shape shift like that under these circumstances.

I think "couldn't react fast enough" is an easy enough explanation to use.

If the writers wanted Jasper to be with the Gems, Pearl would have reacted fast enough. But they don't. They want her to be away for now for whatever crazyness they have planned.

Them: She shapeshifted her outfit in "Beach Party".

ME:True
though I assume that is far easier to do compared to extending her whole arm and increasing it's size.

Them:Why didn't Garnet do it then?

ME: That is a decent point.
The best I got is that she was making sure to keep her balance because everyone was latched on to her for support.
If she did try to grab jasper the weight shift could send them all sliding down into the hole.
