In my opinion, Penders made Knuckles too complicated, and Boom and recent games have made him too dumb. For me, Knuckles is the guy that lives on Angel Island, protecting the M.E. He can be rash and gullible at times, but he knows what's good and evil, even if he doesn't know who is. Knuckles has his own agenda, and honestly, shouldn't be part of Sonic's journeys as much as he is.
