Just not using the right team commands, that's all. You got the genocidal freak option, which will send your partner straight after any bad guy they see, and there's the pussy bitch option which will cause your partner to run straight in the opposite direction of any bad guy they see, and in between there's pretty much whatever's useful.

It always warms my heart to see Mystery Dungeon show up on KYM. The series needs more attention.
