I spent half a day looking for how Mecha Sonic could go Super just like the original, and why Knuckles and Big Arms are able to hurt Super Sonic.

Apparently Big Arms’ slam dunking Sonic out of super mode was a bug, fixed in &Knuckles, as for Knuckles… either he was empowered by the master emerood, as the guardian he has the innate ability to take the emeroods out of supers, he suckerpunched Sonic just as he was about to run out of rings to maintain super mode… or he simply punched Sonic right in the chaos emeralds
