Yeah, it obviously depends on the context too. I think media aimed for younger audiences can get away with it a lot more. Though, that would also depend on if the character can be interesting while being redeemed and afterward as well.

For other characters, sometimes it is nice to see a well written villain slowly build themselves back up. But other times it's better to have it end on a more bitter note. Just because they're sympathetic or you can understand what they're doing, that doesn't mean they should get a free pass after they're beaten.

Of course, it's also nice to sometimes just get an evil for the sake of being evil villain to enjoy.
