In the interview, Onoue explained: 99 There are two different production teams here, simply named Production Team 1 and Production Team 2. Team 1 is fully dedicated to Gear Project, while Team 2 is for the Pokémon operation." "What that means is that Game Freak as a company is prioritising Gear Project, which is production team number one, more than Pokémon in general, We are always trying to create something that is equally exciting, or more exciting than Pokémon." Game Freak's Gear Project initiative encourages employees to present and work on new game projects. It started off as something for the gaps between Pokémon releases. The games that have come from Gear Project include Drill Dozer, HarmoKnight, Tembo the Badass Elephant and Giga Wrecker. The upcoming RPG Town for Nintendo Switch is also from Gear Project Some fans have expressed concern over this shift in priorities, fearing that a lack of focus on Pokémon games could lead to a decline in the overall quality of the games. Others are pleased to see Game Freak more willing to experiment and create original games outside of the Pokémon series. It is possible that we are already seeing the effects of Gear Project ideas crossing into the Pokémon series. Last year, Game Freak released its first self- made Pokémon spin-off game in the form of Pokémon Quest. With both Pokémon Sword & Shield versions and Town scheduled to release in the future for Nintendo Switch, it will be a good opportunity to see how Game Freak's simultaneous development cycle impacts how both games turn out.

In case you were holding out: hope, dashed. Speaking to Inside Gamer, Pokemon boss Junichi Masuda re-confirmed that yes, there are no plans to add the National Pokedex into Sword and Shield. Although there were some "maybes" thrown out since the news came back in June at E3, Game Freak is now sticking to their guns and eliminating the prospect altogether. Masuda states: "We now have no plans to make the Pokemon that are missing in the Galar Pokedex in- game available. That is an approach that we want to continue with Pokemon games in the future. Of course, up to now it has not been possible to encounter every Pokemon in every game, so people had to transfer it from old games via Pokemon Bank to the new game, for example."

I said this in another post, I have no issue with Game Freak not wanting to do just Pokemon and minor projects, but I would like it if Pokemon is handed to another studio if they don't desire to give it the same attention anymore.

But on the other hand, while Game Freak has made fun, smaller projects. You never hear about them much. Giga Wrecker seems to have caught the attention of a handful of PC players, but I'm doubtful projects like these enough to support the company at its current size.

Unless Town actually does surprisingly well.

Pokemon being shelved and no longer being an annual series would be fantastic and probably lead to an improvement of the series entirely, let the devs have some breathing time between games and let them flex their creativity towards other projects
