In case you were holding out: hope, dashed. Speaking to Inside Gamer, Pokemon boss Junichi Masuda re-confirmed that yes, there are no plans to add the National Pokedex into Sword and Shield. Although there were some "maybes" thrown out since the news came back in June at E3, Game Freak is now sticking to their guns and eliminating the prospect altogether. Masuda states: "We now have no plans to make the Pokemon that are missing in the Galar Pokedex in- game available. That is an approach that we want to continue with Pokemon games in the future. Of course, up to now it has not been possible to encounter every Pokemon in every game, so people had to transfer it from old games via Pokemon Bank to the new game, for example."

RIP Pokemon Storage Boxes Backgrounds 2002-2017

For reference's sake, in previous games pokemon storage boxes had random backgrounds you could customize at will just for flavor purposes.

From Let's Go onward, it seems the series will follow suit with the "simplified UI" set by Pokebank and the Nintendo Switch and start excluding the feature from now on. And while one could argue it's too early to tell, I do wonder why would GAMEFREAK deliberately share an image of the storage box interface with a blank BG when the default setting has always been the grass/forest one.

Not a dealbreaker, but it's a shame to see it go.

An actual technical analysis of the whole reused model situation.

tl;dr:

-There's proof some pokemon use alternate models during dynamaxing, like Pikachu using Let's Go's starter Pikachu model (which has extra details on the mouth).
-While Ohmori's argument about redoing models from scratch is for the most part pure balloney, it does hold some grain of truth. The amount conversion, tweaking and time required for each one - due to GF swapping graphical engines often - isn't easy peasy as one would believe.
-It's highly likely all of the pokemon models would've made the jump to Sword & Shield hadn't development deadlines been a bigger priority than porting all the creatures to the new generation.

Overall, I'll say this one is pretty informative and it's a must read for all interested parties.
