Yes, but they were aiming for a story with mass appeal and messages that were pretty much universal. Live-adaptation Mulan was specifically targeting the Chinese market, with all changes designed to appeal them, yet they couldn't bother to bring people who actually understood the market they sacrificed so much to appeal.
