Or was it referencing the plane of limbo between heaven and hell, where the virtuous pagans are sent after death? The Son of the Mask himself often seems like he's in a place of limbo' between good and evil, often using his powers for the greater good (such as delivering the divine providence to Jorge), but other times uses his powers for evil (such as pranking the bouncer with an IV).
