About
Maskposting is a image macro and image edit featuring references to the films in The Mask motion picture franchise, typically as a shitpost. Some consider the format to be an example of a forced meme.
Origin
On February 8th, 2016, an anonymous 4chan [1] user posted the earliest known mention of the format in the /tv/ messageboard. They wrote, "PESTPOSTING IS A SHIT MEME MASKPOSTING IS THE NEW FORCED MEME YOU WILL ALL DO THE CUBAN PETE NOW" (shown below)
Spread
Over the next few weeks, the meme continued over the next few weeks. On February 22nd, an anonymous 4chan[2] user posted, "Is Maskposting the new meme? There's like 3 threads up" (shown below).
The meme seemed to go dormant for about two years, following a brief period of popularity in spring 2017. On July 24th, 2019, an anonymous 4chan user posted a version in /tv/,[3] posting an image from the film Son of the Mask and the quote, "This is the part where you boogie" (shown below).
In 2020, people continued to debate the validity of Maskposting on 4chan. On April 20th, 2020, an anonymous 4chan user wrote,[4] "maskposting was a forced meme that was doomed to fail from the beginning" (shown below, left). Others wrote that they liked the trend. On May 1st, an anonymous user wrote,[5] "I didn't dislike the brief Maskposting fad" (shown below, right).
