Yes Nigel, that conductor of the orchestra we see in every episode of The Muppet Show and a frequent background character in some of the Muppet movies was originally conceived as the host of the show and was the host in the pilot episode The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence, but it was felt he was too dull and it was suggested to make Kermit, an already established and popular character, the lead. Ever since finding that out I've wondered if that would eventually take its toll on his psyche and he'd eventually snap.
