My hot take is it kinda says something when Sega needs fans to keep their mascot respected with stuff like Sonic Mania (also the latest Streets of Rage and Shenmue games weren't made with them publishing or developing), meanwhile Nintendo put out new Mario and Zelda games in the past few years made by their own developers that are beloved.
Also hot take number 2: maybe Nintendo would be less strict on fan games if the people behind them just asked first, look at Cadence of Hyrule. It's basically an officially sanctioned fangame that Nintendo not only allowed to be made but also sold for a profit because the devs came to Nintendo going "can we use Zelda characters and music in our Necrodancer sequel?" and Aonuma and co going "hey we loved your game, sure go ahead."
